El 13 de diciembre del año 2010, en una localidad al sur de la ciudad de Túnez, el joven Mohamed Bouazizi, vendedor ambulante de frutas, se inmolaba frente a un edificio público presa de la indignación por la confiscación arbitraria de su disminuido puesto de ventas itinerante. El acto de desesperación contra el abuso de la policía y la indiferencia estatal bien podría haber pasado inadvertido o, a lo sumo, leído con horror por algunos en una reseña de prensa, sino hubiera desencadenado la serie de protestas que terminaron con la caída del régimen de Ben Alir en Túnez, y que pronto se extendieron a varias naciones africanas, convirtiendo la muerte del joven vendedor en la chispa desencadenante de uno de los cambios políticos más importantes en esa región del mundo.
