Los árboles son importantes en los ecosistemas dado que estos dan un soporte para la fauna y además cumplen con otras funciones como: disminuir la polución, controlar la temperatura, la humedad, proteger el suelo, entre otros. Dentro de la ciudad, los árboles cumplen una función muy importante como la de contribuir a mejorar la calidad del aire, el paisaje, proporcionar alimento y refugio a especies de fauna que habitan en ésta y producir un ambiente de bienestar a los ciudadanos, disminuyendo niveles de ruido y ayudando a controlar la temperatura, entre otros (Jardín Botánico de Bogotá 2009), por esta razón, una de las preguntas que como jóvenes investigadores del semillero se pretende responder es: ¿Cuales son los árboles y arbustos que forman parte de las áreas verdes y del entorno en general de La Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas?.
